課程概述

Montane cloud forest is one of the most representative ecosystems in Taiwan, which is covered by a high incidence of low-level cloud at the canopy level. It is generally found in tropical and subtropical montane regions. Because cloud forests usually develop on the saddles of mountains, where moisture introduced by settling clouds is effectively retained, it becomes an important water source for its downstream ecosystems and a habitat for various floras and faunas. In this class, I will introduce different aspects of the system (biogeochemistry, climate, ecology, management etc.).

課程目標
After completing this class, students are expected to have in depth knowledge of montane cloud forest and appreciate more about this vulnerable and invaluable nature treasure.
課程要求
Evaluation:

Reading reports 4 × 7.5% (30%)
Midterm/final presentations 2 × 10% (20%)
Final report 30%
Participation 20%

Knowledge of montane cloud forest is pivotal for you to compose a professional and high quality final report. Therefore, you are expected to turn in a 1-page short report before each lecture (03/09–30). You should pick a chapter of Bruijnzeel et al. (2010) with the corresponding date and write a short review (e.g., review chapter 11 and return in on 03/09). The review should be written in Chinese(標楷體)or English (Times New Roman), single spaced with the margin of 2.54 cm on each side. It should consist of two paragraphs. The first paragraph is to summary the chapter, the second part (the more important part) is to find and criticize the issues of the work.
In this class, you (as a group) need to give 2 presentations. For the first presentation, which is right after the first field trip, I want you to present the idea of your final report. In the final presentation, you should prepare a 10-min presentation to introduce and explain the concept of your final project. The final report is worth 30% of your grade (details including format, page length etc. will be provided later); it should be evaluated properly and unbiasedly. Therefore, the students, teaching assistants and instructor will all rank each project. The scores will be given based upon the curve within the range of 80–100. Points for participation is not a given. It includes 5 parts: the whole-class field trip (10%), presentation show-ups (2.5% × 2) and final project evaluation (5%).

Field trips:

For each group, there will be two mandatory field trips. The first trip will be held on 04/23–24. The instructor will lead the entire class to walk thru the forest route 100 from 0 to 17K! We will spend a night in a 5-star, internet free (not free internet!) workstation located at 15K. I will introduce the study site and you (as a group) should plan your project materials during the hiking. The idea and structure of your final project should be solidified during our “late night” discussion. The second field trip will be a one-day trip (unless you really want to stay overnight). The teaching assistants will drive you to the site and you expect to finish all your material collection during the time of 5/12–6/07.
